Posted 18 days ago by Les Bayliss One thing that I noticed, is that there is a sensor out to sea near there. A few months ago, mine went walkabout, from the east coast of Australia, to the middle of Australia. So it's possible that some/all of the sensors show as being near that quake aren't actually near that area at all. |

Phidgets.com sensors
(Message 4670)
Posted 29 days ago by Les Bayliss Not sure on this, but I think that the apps are written for the computer types (and OS), and there's code that knows about the "signature" of certain sensors. (Which ports they use, what characters they return, etc.) As for "twice the science", an earthquake is an earthquake. It either occurs or it doesn't. The difference is in the sensitivity - how far away one can be detected and how big (or small) a quake, a given sensor will detect. |

(Message 4666)
Posted 35 days ago by Les Bayliss "Ping triggers" are sent by the server to see if your computer/QCN program are still running. As to why the program keeps losing the sensor, it could be because your computer becomes very busy now and then. The program looks at the sensor 50 times per second, so it needs to "get a word in edgewise" as it were. :) |

Not on the map
(Message 4661)
Posted 38 days ago by Les Bayliss Some time ago my sensor disappeared from the east coast of Australia, and re-appeared in the middle of Australia. It stayed like that until I reloaded the location data into the project. There are currently several sensors shown as in Alaska. If none of these are yours you could try to reload your location. |

Posted 42 days ago by Les Bayliss Preferences are part of BOINC. What you'll need to get into is the computer itself. The next post by the person that you quoted has at least some of it, here. |

Version 7.29 crashes and messages
(Message 4647)
Posted 45 days ago by Les Bayliss Most of the time your computer reports "Sensor not found", but every now and then it finds it. So my guess is that your other BOINC projects are keeping your computer too busy for this project to access the sensor. |

Posted 47 days ago by Les Bayliss What to do with the early warning is something that the principle researcher and associates have no doubt worked on. It's not something that I've seen published, but then I haven't looked into it. |

(Message 4641)
Posted 48 days ago by Les Bayliss If you mean from the QCN server, then no. It's not intended to provide that function. It's to provide an early warning network for when there's a big quake, in quake prone areas. e.g. San Francisco, Japan, etc. |

Posted 49 days ago by Les Bayliss Each WU runs for 24 hours, and then is replaced by another one. If they run for more than that, then the program can't find the sensor. The current tasks start with several thousand "hours" to go, but this rapidly decreases to show the correct amount just as it finishes at the end of 24 hours. Your computer is hidden so I can't see the error messages. Which type of sensor do you have? |

Posted 61 days ago by Les Bayliss Doing a search on the word boinccmd gives a lot of results. These are 2: Boinccmd tool BOINCCMD command line switches I know that it's an alternative way of controlling BOINC, rather than using the BOINC manager, but that's about it. Perhaps you need to run that command line from the directory containing the file? |

Posted 62 days ago by Les Bayliss I'm a Windows person, so I'm struggling a bit here. It's been a while since I built a new computer, but I seem to remember that "accounts" are what people create for each user that will be using the computer. If so, then you need to understand how to create user accounts in Linux, and make one called BOINC. In a "certain place". Where this is I'm not sure. I know that there are usually 3 or 4 partitions: root; boot; swap; and home, and that home is where you should put all of "your" stuff. So perhaps you need the users to be in "/home". But this means that YOU need to create a BOINC user folder, so that the program can put the download stuff into it. The lines posted by Carl after the two that I quoted seem to suggest this, although it's possible that the "-d boinc" should create this folder. In Windows, BOINC is installed in 2 parts in separate locations: 1) The exe (programs) part 2) The data part On my computer, the data part looks like: \BOINC\projects\QCN \BOINC\projects\cpdn \BOINC\projects\cpdnbeta Does this help any? |

Posted 64 days ago by Les Bayliss We talk about it all the time on cpdn. :) And on theSkyNet POGS, on upgrading to this year's version of AVG, it immediately crashed several of my WUs, and continued to do so after I tried setting up exclusions, which wasn't easy in the new version. And the new main screen looked ugly. So I got rid of it a few hours after all the hassle of downloading the big update. I'm now using Microsoft Security Essentials, which updates silently without re-booting or complaining, and has easy set up of exclusions. |
