cool, I'm going to post a news item about this and link to this thread. so do you run qcnlive along side the "boinc/qcn"? that's cool they work together (I didn't know if one would "hijack" the sensor from another). you may want to check your hard drive if it's filling up, as qcnlive writes sac files out every 10 minutes!

also I just put a new version of qcnlive up which has better 2D graphics and some other fixes:

We had a little swarm.
My wife's pewter was down for maintenance for the first one (3.8).
I brought her back up and started qcnlive on both machines.
We then got a 4.0, a 2.5, and a 1.8--
thanx for all your good work...

well thanks to you & your wife for running QCN -- this was one heck of a test of the software & the JoyWarrior's -- although as an east-coast Yankee I would have been shaking in my boots!

I have a naive question. I personally detected all three Yorba Linda earthquakes yesterday, in one way or another. However, my laptop was closed (to protect it from kids). It wouldn't have been running BOINC/QCN while closed, right? If it had been running, how would I view the data so I could take a screen shot like the other users in this thread?

If your computer was on, and recorded a quake trigger; where the data lives depends on your OS.
In Windows XP64 it's in (C:)>Documents and Settings>All Users>Application Data>BOINC>projects>qcn.stanford.edu_qcnalpha>triggers.
In there lives a Compressed (zipped) file for each trigger which, when unzipped, reveals 4 SAC files: significance level, and 3 components of motion (vertical, and two horizontals).

You have to have another program to display these SAC files as a siesmogram. Those programs are also OS specific and 3 or 4 have been discussed in these Forums. There's a discussion going on now in the "Questions and Answers:Windows" Forum, and I've seen a Unix/Linux SAC file reader mentioned somewhere.

==============================

The USGS dropped that 3.1down to a 3.0--
and we've had a few (est. M2-3+) that don't show up in the USGS data...

Addendumb...
...there's also zipped SAC files in (64bitXP) (C:)>Documents and Settings>data.
I believe these are the files that Carl warned about that are created every 10 minutes qcnLive is running--
and have to be deleted if disk space is critical...

oh yeah it depends on your boinc installation. I think Macs it is usually in /Library/Application Data/BOINC/projects/qcn.stanford.edu_qcnalpha (or _sensor now I guess) --- similarly for Linux -- but Windows can be under C:\Program Files\BOINC\projects or in the separate data directory C:\ProgramData\BOINC etc.

well come to think of it qcnlive data will just be in the "data" folder of wherever you put qcnlive (with subfolders under "data" for each day you run qcnlive). I guess someday I'll take off the automatic dumping of everything in qcnlive and actually have the "Record" button work! :-)

Now, after being reviewed by seismologists, they show 2 different 1.5 quakes (with different Event ID#'s) at the exact same time, at different depths!!!

There's a very interesting article in the local paper today..
The headline reads........

Belton woman: Japan earthquake affected water level of area pond.

Then the article...........

Property owner Betty Rhoads and her husband have lived in a house off I-35 for more than 40 years.

The property is located over the Edwards Aquifer.

Years ago, Rhoads said her husband hopped on a tractor and dug out a marshy area located between the front of the house and the interstate.

Ever since then the family has enjoyed a pond in front of their house.
During the summer, the water level typically recedes but it always comes back up when it rains.

The morning of March 11 was different than any other, Rhoads said, explaining that when she awoke and started brewing coffee she noticed that without the benifit of rain, the pond had gained about a foot overnight.

The oddity remained a mystery.

A story in the Telegram seemed to shed light.
The story was about how a monitor in the Edwards Aquifer in Bexar County registered an anomaly about 15 minutes after the 9.0 earthquake that rocked Japan.

Underground water in the aquifer "sloshed around like water in a bucket" for nearly two hours, Roland Ruiz, assistant manager of Edwards Aquifer Authority in Bexar County, said.

The undulations were measured at about 12 inches during the height of the abnormal readings.

"You don't see the under normal conditions", Ruiz said last month.

"There has to be a catalyst to make that happen".

Ruiz explained that the aquifer's 24-hour monitor has recorded similar undulations after large earthquakes around the world.
The question is did an earthquake with an epicenter off the coast of Japan more than 9000 miles away, cause the water level in the pond to rise about a foot overnight without the benifit of rain.
