QCN USB Sensor Installation Guide

(Windows) (OS X)

Configure QCN:

Please follow these instructions to configure QCN on your Mac.

1. Open BOINC: (in the Applications folder). To run and configure QCN the computer must be connected to the internet. If it is not, please wait until it is before proceeding.

2. Add QCN to "My Projects":

  1. Select "Add Project" (Lower Right).
  2. Select "Next".
  3. Under "Project URL" type http://qcn.stanford.edu/sensor

3. Enter your email address and a password:
(If you have installed QCN on another computer, you can add a second computer under the same account by selecting "Yes, existing user")

4. QCN should now be ready for personalized configuration:
Your default web browser should connect to "QCN Account Setup". To begin account setup, enter your user name and location. If your browser does not open, click on the QCN logo and select "Computer Location Info" from the drop down list.

5. Provide your computer's location.
For USB Sensors attached to desktop computers, you need only enter one location if the sensor stays in the same location.

  1. Select one icon, enter the location name such as work, home , or Class.
  2. Select the computer's location on the Google map. For a more accurate location, try the following:
    • Zoom in or zoom out with the + and -.
    • Move the map by dragging it from side to side or up and down.
    • Toggle between "Map View" and "Satellite View".
  3. If the computer is currently at the location you selected, then select ÒSet CurrentÓ to permanently link your IP address with that location.
  4. Select "Update info" so that changes take effect.

6. (Optional) Set QCN/BOINC as your default Screen Saver.

  1. Select "System Preferences" on your dock.
  2. Select "Desktop & Screen Saver".
  3. Select "BOINCSaver".

7. (Optional) Run QCN all the time. QCN hopes you will run QCN continuously in the background - not just when your computer is idle. BOINC and QCN use 2-4% of the CPU. By running BOINC & QCN continuously, you will be more likely to catch an earthquake. QCN thanks you for considering this option.

In BOINC select "Preferences" and then "Do work after idle for '0'" or "(Run Always)" minutes. (If you are running QCN on a laptop with an internal sensor, please do NOT run QCN in "Run Always" mode. Typing on the laptops keyboard will cause too many false vibrations.)

8. Notes:

  1. On laptops, QCN should only run when idle for 3 minutes - Not in "Run Always" mode. That way QCN does just not measure typing.
  2. QCN monitoring only installs and runs properly when connected to the Internet.
  3. If there is an earthquake in your area, please let us know if you felt it.
