If you have a Mac laptop (2006 or later), a Thinkpad (2003 or later), or a desktop with a USB sensor, you can download software to turn your computer into a Quake-Catcher Sensor or an interactive educational tool (QCNLive)., then please follow these instructions:

Quake-Catcher Network Monitoring Software:

Download BOINC (for Windows, Mac, or Linux)

    Directions:

    1. Download & install BOINC. Then follow these directions to setup QCN on your computer.
    2. Open BOINC. Add QCN to the "My Projects" list. First click "Add Project". When prompted, type "http://qcn.stanford.edu/sensor" into the "Project URL" text box:
    3. Click on the "Advanced View" button. (You should see "QCN" or "QCN Alpha Test" under "Projects".
    4. Select the "QCN" or "QCN Alpha Test" project.
    5. Select the "Computer Location Info" button on the left (This will open a Google Maps webpage with your web browser (only works online).
    6. In the Google Maps API, select up to five of your favorite locations to use the laptop (or one location for desktops).
      • Select each radio button bottom left, and then click on where you are located. The better the location, the more useful the data will be! So zoom in all as much as you can and then select your house, appartment, or place of work.
      • Associate each location with an IP address when you are at that location by clicking "set current".
      • (Optional) Set your screen saver to "BOINC".

    Notes:

    1. On laptops QCN should only run when idle for 3 minutes. That way QCN does just not measure typing.
    2. On desktops with externally mounted USB sensors you may want to adjust your settings to run always (i.e. keyboard typing should not trigger as on a laptop). You can do this from the 'Advanced View' on the BOINC Manager to check the box for 'Run Always' and 'Network Activity Always Available' or by editing your QCN/BOINC preferences page and changing the 'Suspend work while computer in use' to 'No'
    3. QCN monitoring only runs properly when connected to the internet.
    4. If there is an earthquake in your area, please let us know if you felt it.
